Short history
The Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Military Field Surgery was founded on September 1, 1962. In the first three years it was headed by professor N. Gladârevski, then between 1965-1968 - by professor Nicolae Testemitanu. For 23 years, between 1968-1991, the department was led by professor S. Stamatin.
In 1986, at the Faculty of Refresher Medical Training, the Department of Traumatology, Military Field Surgery and Disaster Medicine was founded, with professor M. Corlăteanu at the helm until 1999.
In 1990, for the refresher training of doctors, the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology was founded. Until 2005 it was led by professor V. Beţişor, corresponding member of the ASM.
Between 1991-1998, professor I. Marin served as head of the Department of Traumatology, Orthopedics and Military Field Surgery, and between 1998-2012 - professor F. Gornea.
In 2005, the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics and the Department of Military Field Surgery were merged, and in 2010, the subdivision was renamed the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology.
Starting with 2011, five university clinics, based at the Clinical Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopedics and at the Institute of Emergency Medicine, were opened within the Department. The directors of clinics are: university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences N. Caproş, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences Gh. Croitor, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences Gr. Verega, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences A. Taran and Associate Professor, PhD in medical sciences N. Erhan.
From 1.10.2012, the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology has been fronted by professor N. Caproş.
Over the years, the following excellent orthopedic-traumatologists and renowned scientists, who played an essential role in founding the orthopedic and traumatology service of the Republic of Moldova and became well known both in the country and abroad, have worked at the Department: university professor N. Testemitanu, university professor S. Stamatin, university professor I. Marin, university professor Larisa Iacunin, corresponding member of the ASM, university professor V. Betişor, university professor F. Gornea, university professor S. Pîslaru, university professor P. Moroz, university professor V. Remizov, Associate Professor P. Pulbere, Associate Professor C. Cozub, Associate Professor A. Manea, Associate Professor A. Moraru, Associate Professor P. Ţapu, Associate Professor S. Ojog and others.
